CABAS® Continuing Education Policy

POLICY

To maintain active rank status, rank recipients must participate in CABAS® CE events and submit CABAS® CE documentation to the CABAS® CE Subcommittee by the deadline of the identified continuing education cycle. The purpose of the CABAS® CE requirements is to ensure rank recipients expand competencies beyond those required for the last rank conferred to the recipient and to ensure rank recipients remain up to date with CABAS® research developments.

SCOPE

This policy sets out the rules for maintaining CABAS® ranks at all levels.

REVIEW

This policy will be reviewed as deemed appropriate, but no less frequently than every two years.  This policy will be updated as necessary to reflect best practices and to ensure compliance with any changes or amendments to relevant to legislation.

Procedures and Definitions

Continuing Education Cycle
Effective June 30, 2023, all individuals holding a rank will have 2 years from the date of rank conferral to obtain 8 (4 for TA) CABAS® CEUs to maintain active rank status. Rank recipients are required to obtain 8 (4 for TA) CABAS® CEUs within their 2-year continuing education cycle. All CABAS® CEUs must occur within the continuing education cycle to which they are applied. Making up missed CEUs after the continuing education cycle date is not permitted, and CEUs obtained more than the requirement cannot be applied to a subsequent cycle.  For each continuing education cycle, rank recipients will be required to submit permanent products for each event reported. The CE cycle commencement will coincide with periodic CABAS® rank reviews.

Continuing Education Renewal Fees

  • Master Teacher, Behavior Analyst, and Research Scientists Ranks: $125.00 USD every two-year renewal
  • Teacher 1 and Teacher 2: $75.00 USD every two-year renewal  
  • Teaching Assistants: $50.00 USD every two-year renewal 
  • Approved Extension fee: $25 (in addition to the renewal fee)
  • Lapsed fee: $100 (in addition to the renewal fee)

CE renewals will not be complete until the renewal fee has been paid. 

Continuing Education Events
Continuing education events hosted by FASST will meet the CABAS® CEU criteria.  CABAS® CE-approved events may also meet the CE criteria for other credentialing bodies. Certificants are responsible for verifying this information through FASST. Events sponsored by other continuing education providers must meet the event criteria listed below to be recognized as a CABAS® CEU. See the criteria below for CABAS® approved events.

The following qualify for CABAS® CEUs
Any combination of the following CABAS® CEUs is acceptable:

A. Conceptual and Experimental Contributions

  1. Publish an experimental or theoretical paper in a peer-reviewed journal
  2. Publish a chapter in a peer-reviewed text

B. Training and Dissemination

3. Provide a professional training/research presentation
4. Present at a professional conference
5. Mentor more than 50% of a rank or mentor publishable research or dissertation
6. Teach a Strategic Science of Teaching Course or University Course

C. Competency Expansion

7. Complete Research Summaries      8. Participate in a professional training/research presentation.          9. Attend a CABAS® Conference      10.  Complete a Strategic Science of Teaching course.                                        11. Complete ½ subsequent teacher rank (5 modules of Teacher 2 or MT)                                                                      12. For TAs only: Complete 4 modules from the next rank (TA 2 or Teacher 1).

  • Published chapter is submitted to CABAS® CEU committee
  • Date reported for the published text is the date of acceptance for publication 
  • 8 CEUs
B. Training and Dissemination
 
3. Provide a professional training/research presentation
  • Presentation content must include one critical attribute of the CABAS® model 
  • Presentation must be conducted by a provider with an active rank, Master Teacher or higher, and pre-approved by the CEU Committee- see pre-approval process below
  • Presentation may be in person or via online platform 
  • 1 CEU per 50 minutes
  • .5 CEU per 25 minutes
4. Present at a professional conference 
  • Content must include one critical attribute of the CABAS® model 
  • 1 CEU per 50 minutes
  • .5 CEU per 25 minutes
5. Mentor another through a rank or mentor publishable research or doctoral dissertation
  • For mentoring a rank- must sign off on completion of rank for one individual or co-author
  • For mentoring publishable research- must co-author 
  • For mentoring dissertation- must serve on dissertation committee 
  • Publishable research and dissertation content must include one critical attribute of the CABAS® model
  • 8 CEUs for Teacher ranks
  • 4 CEUs for TA ranks
 
6. Teach a Strategic Science of Teaching course or university course 
  • Must use Designing Teaching Strategies: An applied behavior analysis systems approach (Greer, 2002), Verbal Behavior Analysis: Inducing and expanding new verbal capabilities in children with language delays (Greer & Ross, 2008), or a CABAS® approved text. Texts must be reflected in the course syllabus.
  • 4 CEUs per course
 
C. Competency Expansion
 
7. Complete research summaries 
  • Written articles or symposium/paper presentations and implementation of tactic or protocol 
  • Submission of the summaries along with the tactic or protocol data. Submissions must be verified with the initials of an Assistant, Associate, or Senior Behavior Analyst 
  • 1 CEU per summary
8. Participate in a professional training/research presentation
  • Presentation content must include one critical attribute of the CABAS® model
  • 1 CEU per 50 minutes 
  • .5 CEU per 25 minutes
9. Attend a CABAS® Conference 
  • Individual presentations will be approved by the CABAS® Conference Committee
  • 1 CEU per 50 minutes
  • .5 CEU per 25 minutes
10. Complete a FASST Strategic Science of Teaching Course or University Course
  • University course must be a CABAS® based content course from an accredited university
  • Rank recipients may submit other course syllabi to the CABAS® CE Committee for determining CEU eligibility
  • 4 CEUs per course
11. Complete ½ a subsequent teacher rank
  • Must be 5 complete modules, not components of 5 modules

  • 4 CEUs 
12. For TAs only: Complete 4 modules from the next rank (TA 2 or Teacher 1). Must be 4 complete modules, not components of 4 modules. Supervisor should complete the attestation form found on the FASST website: https://fassteaching.org/cabas-continuing-education/continuing-education-renewals/
  • 1 CEU per module—must complete 4
 

CABAS® Presentation Pre-Approval Process

  1. Download the CABAS® Presentation Pre-Approval form here CABAS CEU Pre-approval Form
  2. Complete the form and email to CABASCEU@gmail.com
  3. Your submission will be reviewed and a decision on approval will be emailed back to you within 10 business days

Documentation of CABAS® CEUs:

Rank recipients are required to submit documentation of CABAS® CEUs obtained during the recipients’ continuing education cycle by the deadline notice provided by the CABAS® CE Committee. CEUs must be documented on the CABAS CE reporting form.  See the full policy here CE Policy revised 033126. Rank recipients will be required to submit permanent products for each event reported.
 
Compliance with Continuing Education Requirements:
CABAS® ranked recipients who comply with CE requirements will be designated on the FASST website as “current.” Rank recipients who do not submit documentation of CABAS® CEUs by their deadline will not have the “current” designation.
 
Inactive/Lapsed Policy:
Rank recipients will only be designated as current if they submit the required CABAS® CEUs documentation by the informed deadline. Rank recipients may be designated as Voluntary Inactive by requesting a voluntary inactive status. Rank recipients who are inactive or lapsed may not represent themselves as holding an active CABAS® rank. Rank recipients may remain voluntary inactive for a period of two CEU cycles.
Any type of leave/extension of CEU submission beyond 60 days will have to be considered inactive. This can also be handled on an individual basis.
 
Applying for Reactivation after Lapsed, Inactive, or Voluntary Inactive Rank Status:
Rank recipients whose status has not been designated as current or who are Voluntary Inactive may submit a request to the CABAS® CE committee to reinstate an active status with appropriate documentation.
 
In the event any submitted CEUs do not meet CABAS® CE criteria:
In the event any submitted CEUs do not meet CABAS® CE criteria the rank holder will be given 60 days to replace the unaccepted content with additional content that meets CABAS® CE criteria. Any exceptions will be dealt with on an individual basis. 
 
Requesting an Extension
If a rank holder is aware that they are not going to submit their CEU’s by the recertification deadline, they may request an extension. The extension must be requested prior to the deadline. An extension is valid for 60 days past the deadline. A late fee of $25 will be due in this case. The rank holder will then be required to submit their completed CEU’s within the 60-day timeframe. The rank holder will be considered to have active status throughout the 60-day grace period.

Lapsed Rank Status
If a rank holder misses the submission deadline to maintain active rank status without submitting a request for extension prior to the deadline, their rank status is considered lapsed. These individuals may submit a request for reinstatement to the CE Committee. A late fee of $100 will be due in this case. Reinstatements will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Audits:
The CABAS® CEU Committee will conduct periodic audits. Rank recipients may be asked to submit supporting documentation for entries on the CABAS® CEU Self-Report Form. Failure to submit appropriate supporting CEU documentation will prevent the active designation. Questions may be submitted to the CE committee at CABASCEU@gmail.com.

The status of rank recipients will be publicly posted on the FASST website: https://fassteaching.org/cabas-ranks/rank-database/
 
CABAS Continuing Education Submission Process
  1. Download the CABAS® CEU Self -Report Form here CABAS CE reporting form
  2. Complete the Renewal form and payment and upload permanent products of your CEUs. These include research summaries, mentored ranks, workshop certificates, research update certificates, and conference CEU certificates. Please send as PDF attachments.
  3. Your submission will be reviewed, and you will be contacted with a decision on approval.
